Global data processing has allowed us to reveal a set of specific folklore parallels between the Finnic and Sámi traditions on one hand and Siberian peoples on the other. We analyse the data for ten of these motifs, which consist of cosmological and aetiological concepts as well as trickster and adventure episodes. In Europe, these motifs are extremely rare, and in most cases occur only in the Finnic and Sámi traditions. In Siberia, the motifs are spread mainly among the Ob-Ugrians, Samoyeds, and Yeniseians. The pattern of distribution is consistent with the linguistic data concerning the east–west dispersal of Uralic speakers from their homeland and the evidence of gene flow from Siberia to the circum-Baltic area, which began no later than the Bronze Age. This suggests that spread of the observed motifs in Fennoscandia and the Eastern Baltic is due to migration and cultural impulses from the Volga-Ural region and North Asia.
