" The Lands of Denemarc: Cultural Differences and Social Networks of the Viking Age in South Scandinavia" men kom inte förrän nu på att posta den i den här tråden.
First, it should be noted that this evidence appears to be consistent with thatof the early written sources. The Storebælt boundary offers a plausible explanationof the distinction between South Danes and North Danes of the Old EnglishOrosius, of which the former were located in Jutland, while the latter lived ‘bothin the main lands and in the islands’ to the east and north of them: ‘7 be eastan him[sc.
Suþdenum] 7 be norþan sindon Norðdene, ægðer ge on þæm maran landum geon þæm iglandum’ (Bately 2007, 43; cf. Bately 1980, 13). Wulfstan’s commentfound a little further on in the text that Bornholm and Blekinge pertain to theSwedes (‘hyrað to Sweon’) rather than to Denemearce makes sense in light of themany boundaries passing through eastern Skåne. The main divisions between Jutland, Sjælland, and Skåne are echoed in Adam of Bremen’s description of c .1070, which stress these as social territories as much as natural regions. On some points Adam’s description even projects social boundaries as imaginary top-ography. So Skåne is ‘almost an island’ except for ‘a narrow strip of land, which, inthe eastern part of the mainland, separates Denmark from Sweden. Here there aredeep forests and very high mountains’ (‘fere insula [. . .] praeter unum terraebrachium, quod ab oriente continens Sueoniam disterminat a Dania. Ubi sunt profundi saltus montesque asperrimi’: Lappenberg 1876, 159: Adamus § 4.7; cf.Lund 2000). A similar distinction between Jutland, Sjælland, and Skåne as socialterritories, often contesting ones, is met on many occasions in other early writtensources, for example, Ailnoth’s Chronicle (c . 1100) or Saxo’s Gesta Danorum (c . 1200). Saxo also distinguishes south-western Jutland as Frisia minor , ‘LittleFriesland’ — an appropriate name in light of the many affinities noted with theFrisian area (Olrik and Ræder 1931, 6; Zeeberg 2000, 17: Saxo praef., 2.2).
