Om jag förstår detta rätt skall mördarens familj kompensera den mördades familj. Hrothgar och Grendel skulle därmed vara släkt enligt en strikt bedömning. En mindre strikt bedömning skulle kunna vara att Hrothgar känner skuld för att Hondscio blivit mördad ”hemma” hos Hrothgar:
